Transform your eBook
or White Paper
into a printed book today!
Do you already have an eBook or white paper you've been marketing? If you do, you're already well-positioned to break into print.
It's true, digitally creating an eBook or a white paper and selling it online is perhaps one of the quickest and easiest ways to market your ideas, establish your expertise, and sell to a global audience.
But what if you could establish yourself even more – with a printed version of your eBook or white paper – for very low cost?
What if you could tell people you not only publish digital information products, but you also have a printed book – or two, or three – to your name?
It's actually easier to do, than you probably think. Publishing your own print book with a high-quality cover, a well-designed interior, and an ISBN, which is indistinguishable from other books on the mainstream market today, is now a possibility. And for a lot less money than you'd probably guess.
I should know. Since I started publishing print books with Lulu.com in 2004, I've published more than 15 books of my own. And I've done it all for less than $1,000, total. What's more, I've perfected my system of creating books with Lulu, the powerful online print-on-demand service that lets me put my books out in print for – literally – between $10 and $150 each. I've even published some of my books for no money.
“Impossible!” you say? Actually, it's very possible. I've done it, myself, and you can too. The currency I use, instead of just money, is knowledge and hard work. Just about anyone, with the right information and a willingness to walk through a few extra steps and pay attention to details, can do it too!
If you already have an eBook or white paper, you may be able to produce a good-looking printed version of that work for very low cost.
In fact, if you already have the content, the hardest part is done. Compared to writing, publishing with Lulu's print-on-demand system is the easy part!
Okay, you may ask, so it's easy and it's cheap... but why should I
bother? I can't make as much money off each printed book, as I can with each eBook, and it can take days (even weeks!) longer than just creating a PDF or an eBook program on my computer. What's the point in slowing down my info product creation system?
It's true, print publishing isn't nearly as cost-effective as digital publishing. And it does take more time to layout and publish a printed book. But there are numerous intangible benefits to having a print book (or two or three) in your creative portfolio. And with the information contained in the new guide "Preparing Your Digital Information Products for Print Publications" you can take those intangible benefits to the bank.

You can establish greater credibility in your field
Writing and publishing isn't just about selling product – it's about getting your ideas out there and making your mark. It's about increasing “mind share” and establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field of expertise. It's about widening the reach of your ideas and bringing them to life in the hearts and minds of readers the world over. If you have deep expertise in a certain field, someone will need to know what you know. With a printed book, you can get your information into the hands of people who aren't in front of a computer, or who prefer to learn from and refer to printed information, versus digital.
With a printed book – especially one with an ISBN, the International Standard Bookseller Number that gets you into bookstore ordering catalogs and inventories worldwide – you can approach magazines and newspapers and radio and television hosts and have something in hand to talk about with them. You can mail your book to reviewers and reporters, and you can hold up your creation for the camera, when it comes time to tell the audience what all the excitement is about.
And when members of your audience go to their local bookstore to see if they carry your book (depending on what service you use to publish your book), they can put in a request for the book from the bookstore, and help you get it stocked on the bookshelf stores. (You may already be convinced, like many other infopreneurs, that bookstores are not the place to sell books, but it doesn't hurt to see your book on the shelves of a brick-and-mortar store.)
Publishing in print can take your ideas to a whole new social level and get you the kind of exposure once reserved only for the connected elite. Getting a physical book published has a way of instantly establishing you as an expert, in ways that producing (even getting rich from) digital information products can't, in the offline “real world”. When people hear you've written a book, and they see that book for real, a well-trained connection kicks in, somewhere in the back of their minds, that says you must be pretty smart, if you've been published. Chances are, you are! You were pretty on-the-ball before you got published. But a book has a way of establishing your expertise, that even the most sophisticated eBook or white paper can't match.
In the new independent publisher's guide, Preparing Your Digital Information Products for Print Publication, you'll find pointers on how to transform your eBook or white paper content into a more “book-like” material, including:
Using the proper tone in your writing
Words you should edit out of your content, when you transition to print from digital
How to add “fluff” book elements you'd never use in digital format, but that actually bring your print book up to par with others like it on the marketplace today and make it more attractive to reviewers and buyers
Secret (but not very well hidden) ways to design your book like the pros do

You can reach a much wider audience than you can with an eBook or white paper and tap a market that prefers printed books to digital information products.
Publishing a printed book widens the reach of your ideas in ways that digital media can't quite do. You open up your ideas to a whole different audience, and you get the chance to make even more of an impact with your concepts and your unique “take” on the world. You may have distilled everything you know in a highly valuable eBook or digital white paper, but the print world offers you yet another medium (or “channel,”) for your ideas, that has an even wider reach than the internet.
After all, like it or not, a lot of people still prefer printed books to eBooks. They like – no, they love – the feel of a printed copy in their hands. It gives them a sense of well-being and solidity, to have a physical work they can carry with them and put on their bookshelves. They're “old school” and they like it that way. Or, they just never warmed up to eBooks or digital media.
Just look at who's reading what on the subway or commuter trains or at the airport – although many folks already have laptops, they prefer printed books. Even with the rise of the internet and electronic books and media, more and more people are re-discovering the magic of a book. Books don't require batteries, they don't need to be turned on. You don't have to wait for them to "boot up" before you can use them, and you can turn pages quickly without hitting the wrong button that makes something unexpected happen! You can read a book anywhere, anytime, without needing a computer to do it, so anyone who can read, of any economic bracket, can enjoy it.
For all the talk about “portable media,” these days, a book is really the ultimate in portable media! It fits in your hand, it doesn't require batteries, and you can take it just about anywhere! As advanced as our technology may be, there's nothing like a book to truly “transport information” quickly and efficiently, across the bounds of time and space. Ironic, isn't it, that one of the best mediums for portable, instantaneous information sharing is just the thing that a lot of us thought was on its way out, with the advent of the internet!
You publish in print, your audience extends beyond the technological "haves" and you reach the "have-nots". You can get your ideas into the hands of people without a computer or a broadband connection. A book is easy to use, easy to transport, and – unlike some of the cutting-edge entertainment technology available today – everybody understands what they're all about.
When you publish a printed book, you level the playing field for potential customers, and you make it possible for a wider variety of people to access and enjoy your work. You extend your own marketing possibilities — and in a competitive info product market, every advantage you can get, is a good one!
Publish a printed book, and reach the people who never warmed up to digital information.
In Preparing Your Digital Information Products for Print Publication, you'll get a step-by-step list of the publication process, covering:
Proper timing for starting (and completing) the different elements of your print publishing project
Resources and guidance for producing a professional-grade printed book cover
How to streamline your cover creation, so you don't get hung up at the 11th hour with tricky production issues

You'll feel the satisfaction of holding
a real-life honest-to-goodness
tangible product in your hands...
and have a published work
to promote in the mainstream media.
Imagine seeing your very own book sitting on your bookshelf! Or visiting friends and seeing your work on theirs! Imagine being able to give your book as a holiday or birthday present... to the people you've been telling about your book for years!
My favorite reason of all, for publishing a printed book, is the profound satisfaction that comes from holding a real, honest-to-goodness tangible book in your hands. I've been a book reader for over 30 years, and I've never lost my love for the sight of words on a printed page, the feel of a solid tome, the sound of pages turning... And it's even better, when the words on the page are mine! Some would call it vanity, but I call it doing justice to my God-given talent... and having something to show for all my work, all those live-long years of writing, writing, and writing some more, against all odds, hope against hope
Now, I'm a very tactile person, when it comes to words, so I like to have something to hang onto. Digital is great – it's my medium of choice, these days, and you just can't beat it for efficiency and power. But I can't flip through the pages of a PDF quite the same way I can thumb through a book, and it doesn't give me that same sense of security and comfort that I got from the books of my childhood. Plus, no matter how convinced I am, that my ideas are great, the simple act of holding printed evidence of them in my hands, is deeply satisfying on a level I don't get from holding a computer printout of one of my many works. I just love books, and I just love publishing them!
Because I know that something real has come of my years of writing. I know that something solid and material has... materialized from my talents and my dedication. I have solid proof (I'm very logical, that way) that I have seen my ideas through to completion and I've done right by them. Even if nobody else ever sees my work, I have the satisfaction of seeing the books I've written on my bookshelf.
The great thing, is, though, that I'm not the only person who sees my work. Since I've published actual books, I can send them out to media outlets for their review. Whether I'm approaching book reviewers or radio and television hosts, my books get into the hands of people who can spread the word about them.
Now, media folks are always looking for new stories, new angles. When you send them your book, you're actually doing them a big favor (provided, of course, your book is about something they're covering!) and by putting a printed version in their in-box, you're making it that much easier for them to notice your information, and you're dramatically speeding up the process of communicating with them.
It's simple logistics, really. Think about it... No matter how good or valuable the ideas in your eBook or white paper may be, it can be an extended process for someone to get to those ideas. If you're dealing only in digital, someone needs to open the document or program on their computer, and print it out — however long that takes! — and then make sure they have all the pages in one place. If you're dealing with media folks, that someone may be an assistant or a producer or some other support person... not necessarily the busy host, who has plenty of other things to worry about. You're making the process of getting your ideas out there a little bit more complex, if you just send along a digital file for someone to read. And if they're busy — as most media folks are — they may never find the time to read what you've sent them, let alone print it out and keep it handy.
A book, on the other hand, makes it quick, easy and convenient for members of the media to read and digest your ideas.
Do the reporters and interviewers of the world a favor, and publish your ideas in print! If you've already got an eBook or white paper, you can leverage that content into a format that mainstream media is looking for.
In Preparing Your Digital Information Products for Print Publication, you'll receive a blow-by-blow rundown of what you'll need to include in your printed book to bring it up to par with others on the market today. You'll learn:
The different elements of a standard printed book, like front matter, content and back matter
Strategies for laying out your book for maximum professional impact
Techniques for controlling your page count – either making it less or making it more – to either save money on production (and increase your profit margin) or expand a “thin” product into a respectably sized book

It's easier, cheaper and
more cost-effective than ever before!
Want to publish a print book with a high-quality cover, a well-designed interior, and an ISBN (so you can promote to media, sell on Amazon.com and get into bookstore inventories)? Creating your own printed book which is indistinguishable from other books on the mainstream market today is easier than ever before... and for a lot less money than you'd guess.
I should know. Since I started “stealth publishing” in 2003 (using pen names), I've published more than 15 books of my own. And I've done it all for an average of $50/book. I've actually spent more on coffee, in the past three years, than I've spent on publishing!
What's more, I've perfected my system of creating books with Lulu.com, and extremely powerful and versatile online publishing service that lets me put my books out in print for – literally – between $10 and $150 each. I could even publish a book for no money, if I chose (if I didn't go with any bells and whistles and didn't get an ISBN). I've done, it in fact. The first time I spent any money, was when I ordered review copies for my publicity campaign.
“Impossible!” you say? “You can't publish for free!”
Actually, it's very possible. I've done it, and you can too. If you have an eBook or white paper, you may be able to produce a good-looking printed version of that work for very low cost, too.
Now, it's important to understand that translating your digital content into book format takes a little extra “doing”. There are all sorts of details you have to keep in mind, like page sizing, margins, how much space to leave, here and there, and where to insert blank pages. You have to shift your orientation a little bit, away the from fast-to-market, do-it-now-and-fix-it-later approach that goes with a lot of eBooks. As a print publisher, you need to think in more permanent, established terms, than you do for the digital format. Thanks to centuries of standardized publishing practice, printed books have a set, defined structure, which you'll need to follow, if you want to be taken seriously as a book author.
It's true, preparing your information for the print world can be a real pain, at times. I'll admit I've gotten pretty frustrated in the course of discovering the best way to format my digital content for print. And a lot of my discoveries were trial-and-error (with the emphasis on error!). Putting out a printed book can take days — even weeks — longer than cranking out digital products, and you may not make as much money on the finished product. And to some infopreneurs, the hassle and the lower profit margins may not seem worth it.
But it's a small price to pay to get your ideas in front of a wider audience, and be taken seriously by the book readers of the world. All that effort is necessary, and the extra trouble and time you spend can really pay off, in terms of mind share and though leadership. How well you follow the conventions of print book publishing, can mean the difference between being taken seriously by reviewers, interviewers, and your reading public, and being dismissed as just another wanna-be writer who got their hands on some advanced technology and a credit card.
Another benefit of going through the motions, is it gives you a deeper appreciation of your talents and your abilities. Cranking out eBooks, as quick and easy as it can be, can sometimes dull your vision around the true value of your ideas. There's nothing like investing hours and hours in making your book look exactly right, to give you a greater appreciation of your talents and the true worthwhile of your ideas.
So, make the most of your talents with a printed book! The extra time and effort you spend on ensuring your book is the highest quality that you can create is not an expense, it's an investment — that really pays off.
